Bolin was a member of an early '70s jazz-fusion group called Energy. Although they never issued any studio albums during the guitarist's lifetime, a few releases comprised of live material and radio broadcasts would be issued many years later.
The list of artists that Tommy Bolin recorded with during his short career includes Zephyr, Billy Cobham, the James Gang, Alphonse Mouzon, Moxy, and Deep Purple.
It was original James Gang singer/guitarist Joe Walsh that got back in touch with his former bandmates and suggested they hire Bolin (after Walsh's initial replacement on guitar, Domenic Troiano, didn't work out). Bolin would appear on two James Gang albums, Bang and Miami.
