Although Shabazz Palaces began as an unknown project in 2008, frontman Ishmael Butler already had a Grammy under his belt. He won a Grammy for Best Rap Performance in 1994 for the song "Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like That)" as part of the Hip-Hop collective Digable Planets.
In 2009, Shabazz Palaces signed a record deal with Seattle label Sub Pop. Frontman Ishmael Butler told MTV that the label is "exemplary at what it does" and that seeing label mates Fleet Foxes reassured him that he was doing the right thing by working with Sub Pop.
When interviewed by Vice magazine, Shabazz Palaces frontman Ishmael Butler said the sports star he'd compare himself to most would be Jason Terry from the NBA's Dallas Mavericks. Butler said he's like Terry because "it's not necessary to be in the limelight only for the team to do well and I like his style and I feel like that too."
