He went to Emerson College in Boston, where he earned a degree in film production in 2002. He chose music because he thought it would be easier (he found out that wasn't always the case).
His father has a degenerative disease called myotonic muscular dystrophy. When he was in college, Hutchinson learned there was a 50 percent chance that he had the disease as well, but he didn't get tested for it until after he completed his album Easy Street in 2016. It was good news: he didn't have the disease.
He signed to Maverick Records in 2005, but the label was in turmoil and folded before releasing any of his material. With no label, he issued the album ...Before I Sold Out independently in 2006. The following year, Perez Hilton, who had a huge following, posted about it on his blog, earning Hutchinson a label deal with Warner Bros. His first release on the label was Sounds Like This in 2008.
