Phonk is a subgenre of hip hop music that originated in Memphis, Tennessee in the early 1990s. It is characterized by its heavy use of synthesizers, drum machines, and chopped and screwed samples. The sound is often dark and aggressive, with lyrics that often focus on topics such as drugs, violence, and sex. It is heavily influenced by the Southern hip hop sound, as well as trap music.
