The Game Is Over

This guitar-driven anthem is a cry to be real about our inner feelings of depression and anxiety. Lead singer Amy Lee is not one to hide her feelings. Her visceral and honest lyrics have long connected with Evanescence fans; on "The Game Is Over," she sings about the pressure we face to put on a front when inside we're in turmoil.

Had enough, I've really had enough Had enough of denial I'm not alright, but I'm not gonna lie I don't know that I ever was Said Lee: "This song is about being sick of the facade. The disguises we wear for others to make them feel comfortable, the inside feelings being so different than what we show on the outside to fit within the boundaries of what's socially acceptable, or what's not going to make you unpleasant or too 'weird' to be around." Lee determines to remove her mask and cut out the false smiles. Change me into something I believe in Change me so I don't have to pretend "'The Game Is Over' is a promise to myself and out loud that I'm going to be more of my real, inner self on the outside - not lock her up because she can't be contained anymore," said Lee. "It's also a prayer to become better, to not feel so messed up, locked up, and hurt inside."

The band shot the accompanying visual themselves on iPhones, in collaboration with their go-to director P.R. Brown. Filmed during the COVID-19 lockdown, the clip is a nightmarish, effects-laden look at the emotional havoc that the pandemic has wrought. Said bassist Tim McCord: "This was by far and away the most difficult video I've ever been a part of, emotionally. In order to capture the raw emotion of what life really is for us these days, I had to get to some really dark places. I hope we can all view this video and heal together."
