In early 2018 the British-Japanese singer-songwriter Rina Sawayama got together with Lauren Aquilina (CLC's "Devil," Plested's "Beautiful & Brutal") to write a song from a BloodPop beat. They sat on the floor of Sawayama's tiny rented living room and penned a feel-good pop anthem about a fantasy girl. The pansexual singer explained to Apple Music: "'Lucid' is about living a different life through dreaming, whether it's to be with the dream girl or to be the dream girl."
Rina Sawayama kept the song in her back pocket for over two years before releasing it on November 25, 2020 as the lead single from the deluxe version of her eponymous debut album. She said: "2020's been a tough year so I wanted to finish it off with a dance bop to take us into a more hopeful 2021."
Sawayama was a little-known unsigned artist back in early 2018, so it was quite a coup for her to link up with BloodPop. The American musician is known for writing and producing songs for Justin Bieber ("Sorry," "Friends") and Lady Gaga ("Stupid Love," "Rain On Me").
