Kid Cudi and Kanye West's namesake track finds an introspective Cudi searching for some meaning. Reachin' out, huntin' for the truth I guessin' I'm just sick of runnin' All this time searchin' hard for somethin' I can hear the angels comin' Kanye meanwhile muses on the temptations and expectations that come from being a famous rapper. For anybody who said that I was better off dead Told em "Don't ever believe nothin' that you ever read" Got a Bible by my bed, oh yes, I'm very Christian Constantly repentin', 'cause, yes, I never listen Don't like bein' questioned and don't like bein' less Than any a competition in any of my professions So I gotta guess then, I gotta stay the best man
That's Yasiin Bey on the hook and bridge (You might recognise him from his former performer name of Mos Def). One of the founding fathers of social conscious hip hop, the New York rapper has previously collaborated with Kanye West on several occasions, including the tracks "Lord, Lord, Lord," "Two Words" , "Drunk and Hot Girls" and "Good Night."
The title phrase is a reference to kids seeing what adults no longer allow themselves to view. It is also the name of Kid Cudi and Kanye West's duo. The pair's relationship dates back to 2008 when West signed Cudi to his GOOD Music imprint and started mentoring him. Yeezy's fourth album 808s & Heartbreak featured significant stylistic contributions from his new signing. The pair continued to collaborate and despite a public falling out that played out on social media in 2013, Cudi has been the only artist to appear on every post-808s Kanye West album.
