Together Forever

The follow-up to Astley's first hit "Never Gonna Give You Up," "Together Forever" was also written by the British production team of Stock, Aitken and Waterman. The songs are similar in tempo and lyrical content, as they find Astley singing about a love that will last forever. Both songs went to #1 in the US, but "Together Forever" stalled at #2 in the UK while Kylie Minogue's "I Should Be So Lucky" - also a Stock-Aitken-Waterman production - secured the #1 spot.

Stock-Aitken-Waterman wanted a follow-up that would solidify the image of the loyal guy with the velvet voice they created with Astley's debut single. "When we'd done all the other tracks, we listened to them and thought... people have already bought 'Never Gonna Give You Up,'" Mike Stock explained to Billboard. "What else is there (on the album) that really does compare? We thought we needed 'Together Forever' to get home to people what Rick could be."

Astley found it "kind of bizarre" when this song rose to the top of the American chart. "The first one, 'Never Gonna Give You Up,' had done it in so many countries that it wasn't a total shock and surprise," he told Songfacts. "It was just like, 'Oh my God, it's happened there as well.' But, there was a part of me that thought, I might be one of those guys who manages to squeeze one past them and that might be it. And then the second one, 'Together Forever,' I don't think it was as big a song, but it went to #1 and it got a load of play."
