This song was written by Semisonic frontman Dan Wilson, who explained: "When I wrote that song I was thinking about sex and relationships and what makes for a good partner in life. It's not always whether you're compatible, it's much more whether you have some chemistry - whether there's a spark. When we finished the album, I realized the same is true about being in a band. It doesn't matter if your musicianship is perfect, it doesn't matter if everybody has the same taste, all that matters is if there's chemistry between the band members, so I chose that as the title of the album also."
The line "all about chemistry" provided the title for the album, which was Semisonic's third. Soon after, the band's mixture became unstable and broke down; Wilson embarked on a solo career and became a top songwriter for other artists, co-writing Adele's monster hit "Someone Like You."
