Rory Graham, aka Rag'n'Bone Man, wrote "Crossfire" about a mad dream he had where there's just him and one other person left on this planet. He explained to Apple Music that everybody else died as they all "just stood around waiting for somebody else to change stuff."
Graham told the BBC the song is about the curse of "stupid male pride."
Graham wrote "Crossfire" with his keyboard player/musical director Ben Jackson-Cook and bassist Bill Banwell. Mike Elizondo (50 Cent's "In Da Club," Carrie Underwood's "Cowboy Casanova," Twenty One Pilots' "Stressed Out") produced the track.
