Jungle Love

This Tarzan-like tune, like many of Steve Miller's, contains mostly sexual innuendo as he sings about finding a woman and having a little "jungle love." Various jungle sounds were added for effect.

Miller didn't write this song. It was composed by his bass player Lonnie Turner along with Greg Douglass, who became his guitarist. Miller explained in the book The Guitar Greats: "Lonnie came into the studio and said he'd written this little tune which he and Greg had recorded in a garage, and gave me a tape of it. That was the first time I'd ever heard Greg Douglass play guitar, and I asked Lonnie who he was and whether he was in town. They came to the studio the next day and we recorded the song in 45 minutes. I sang it, and that was it – all on the record, and then Greg joined the band for a couple of years. He's a really good guitar player."

The Steve Miller Band was originally Steve Miller Blues Band. After seven bluesy albums starting in 1968, they started charting pop hits with "The Joker," the title track to their eighth album, released in 1973. "Jungle Love" was part of this run that also included "Rock 'N Me" and two other tracks from the 1977 Book Of Dreams album: "Jet Airliner" and "Swingtown." Miller took some time off before releasing the band's next album, Circle of Love, in 1981. The next album, Abracadabra (1982), landed a #1 hit with the title track.
