This emotional anthem was born out of a pivotal time in Paul Klein's life. The LANY frontman first met the UK singer Dua Lipa in the summer of 2017 and the pair dated for five months before splitting in January 2018, Klein reportedly wrote "Thru These Tears" shortly after the "New Rules" songstress dumped him. You said it was over, but when we got closer, you cried on my shoulder In the end I'm gonna be alright, but it might take 100 sleepless nights to make the memories of you disappear But right now I can't see nothing through these tears Resolving to throw himself into a new creative project after the breakup, Klein set aside 50 days to come up with material for LANY's second album. He used writing as a form of inner-therapy and came out the other end with a collection of songs about the breakdown of his relationship with Lipa. Throughout the sessions for Malibu Nights, this euphoric pop banger with a fragile heart became the track that the band would continually return to first.
Paul Klein told Genius how the song focuses on the difficult aftermath of his breakup. "For a while, I was waking up and every day it hurt a little bit more. People had these weird equations," he explained. "They'd be like, 'However long you were with somebody divided by two.' You'd take that in half and that's how long it's gonna take, or some people were like, 'However many months you were with somebody, that's how many months it's gonna take.' There was a day where I woke up and it, for the first time, it didn't hurt as much."
