Did You Know?

Interesting facts and trivia about The Fight Song. By Songfacts®.

This song is all about rebellion, a hallmark of Marilyn Manson's music. It's summed up in the chorus: But I'm not a slave to a god That doesn't exist And I'm not a slave to a world That doesn't give a s--t Manson was raised Christian and terrified by the biblical prophesy of the rapture. He later used this imagery, often culled from the Book Of Revelation, in his music, but from the perspective of the Antichrist. "To me, Satan ultimately represents rebellion," he told Beliefnet. "Lucifer was the angel that was kicked out of heaven because he wanted to be God. To me, what greater character to identify with?"

The song title is a play on school fight songs used to drum up school spirit at pep rallies and other events Marilyn Manson fans tend to avoid. This is his own version of a fight song, where instead of cheering for the school, he's questioning everything about it. Many of Manson's fans at this time were teenagers and could closely identify with the concept.

The lyric in the bridge is a quote often attributed to the Russian dictator Josef Stalin: "The death of one is a tragedy; the death of millions is just a statistic."
