With lyrics by Dream Theater lead singer James LaBrie and guitarist John Petrucci, this song is about the psychological defense mechanism known as denial; basically, this defense mechanism consists of the outright refusal to acknowledge inconvenient truths.

"Caught In A Web" is part of Dream Theater's third album, Awake, their second with James LaBrie. The cover art contains images taken from various songs; you'll notice a spider in the lower-right corner to represent this one.

The extended rattle around the 3:32 mark was produced by a vibraslap. The percussion instrument, consisting of a wooden ball connected to a hollow box of metal teeth, also showed up on "A Change Of Seasons" a year later.
