This song stemmed from a demo vocalist Casey McPherson submitted (with the working title of "Daylight"). The band kept the verse feel and melody but pretty much re-wrote everything else. McPherson recalled in a Reddit AMA that it was intended to be "a song of redemption." He added: "We may not be able to control what happens to us, but we can control what we do about it."
The "Kayla" title was suggested at the vocal sessions and it got the thumbs up from producer Peter Collins. Keyboardist Neal Morse commented: "It seemed to work well with the concept we had going, kind of a spiritual love story thing."
