"Last Day Under The Sun" finds Michael Poulsen singing about having another opportunity after struggling with addiction issues. I'm in the lion's cave I've done it all before I feel alive again But maybe not for long The lyrics were inspired by a Johnny Cash biography. Said Poulsen: "When I read his book, he went through tough times with alcohol and drugs. He walked into a cave to lay down to die. But he wakes up and feels like he has been given a second chance."
The song's music video features a group of people being transformed after experiencing tragedy. The clip was directed by Jakob Printzlau, who had previously helmed Volbeat's visuals for "Cape Of Our Hero," "Lonesome Rider," "The Devil's Bleeding Crown" and "16 Dollars."
After Johnny Cash woke up in Tennessee's Nickajack Cave in 1967, he had a spiritual epiphany. The Man in Black changed his life and recommitted himself to the Christian faith. Poulsen explained to Billboard what drew him to Cash's turnaround. "I could totally use that, because I think we as human beings struggle with different things in our lives - be it drugs or alcohol or a loss of a family member - where we dig ourselves into that dark place and don't know how to get out again. I've been there with alcohol and mourning the loss of my father. If it wasn't for a strong mind and some really good friends, I don't know where I'd be. But I found a way out of that dark place and now I'm enjoying life. So ['Last Day Under the Sun'] is a song about hope and forgiveness and the way to come out on the other side, where there is light."
