In his notes for Songs Of Experience, Bono mentions his "brush with mortality," a health scare that rocked him to the core. "I was on the receiving end of a shock to the system myself, a shock that left me clinging on to my own life like a raft," he writes. "It's an arresting experience. I was arrested." Bono paints a picture of his near death experience during this track. If there is a light We can't always see And there is a world We can't always be Bassist Adam Clayton explained to The Sun: "There are a lot of songs about light in the U2 repertoire. It's an image of faith and obviously people having near-death experiences describe seeing a bright light. So these are themes that are being spoken about."
