The second single from Ultraviolence, Del Rey wrote the atmospheric ballad with Rick Nowels. The San Francisco-born songwriter previously worked with Del Rey on her hit songs "Summertime Sadness" and "Young And Beautiful."

Del Rey told The Sun: "Shades Of Call is inspired by a person I met and just living here and being a real California baby." "He made a strong visual impact on me," she added.

The video was filmed in Los Angeles in May 2014 and pairs Del Rey with Hollywood tattoo artist Mark Mahoney. He previously appeared in the clip for "West Coast" during the car scenes.
