The title track of The XCerts fourth studio album, the lyrics were inspired by frontman Murray Macleod's split from his longtime girlfriend. He told Kerrang: "My ex-partner heard this when we were still in touch, and she loved it but it made her sad too. That's a good thing, though, as moving someone with your music is the whole point. It was quite a dramatic break up for us, but out of that whole experience came this great song and it's very special to me. I didn't want to bum people out with these songs, though - I wanted there to be some light in them."
Murray MacLeod originally wrote the song for his mum under a different title when his grandmother passed away. Initially, it was going to be left off the album's tracklisting, but co-producer Gary Clark (McFly, Demi Lovato) suggested they take another look at the tune and change it to "Hold On To Your Heart."
