Lauv defines modern loneliness in this song as feeling alone despite having plenty of friends. That's because he never takes the time to get in contact with them. Or, it may be a byproduct of being an introvert.

Lauv told MTV News this is a "super, super meaningful song" to him. So meaningful, in fact, he got the phrase "Modern Loneliness" tattooed on his arm. He added: "I feel like these days, I'm so used to never being alone but feeling so alone. It's so easy to feel totally isolated, even if there's people around you. I just think it's this condition that a lot of people in my generation feel."

Lauv wrote the song with his go-to co-writers Michael Pollack (I'm So Tired...") and Michael Matosic ("I Like Me Better").
