Did You Know?

Interesting facts and trivia about Hero. By Songfacts®.

In this sensitive ballad, Enrique Iglesias asks his lover a series of questions, assuring her that if she wants in, he'll be her "hero" - the guy who will take away her pain and be there through thick and thin. It went over very well with Enrique's female fans.

Iglesias wrote "Hero" with the British songwriters Paul Barry and Mark Taylor, who also collaborated on his hits "Be With You" and "Bailamos." "I had an idea to write a song about all the crazy things you'd say to someone," Barry said in The Billboard Book Of #1 Hits. "I had the line, 'Would you dance if I asked you to dance or would you laugh at me?' That was my original pitch to Enrique. From that, we started writing line after line, and 'Hero' came together quickly."

This song was released on August 14, 2001, just a month before the September 11 attacks on the US. The song doesn't describe the type first-responder heroes, but the theme of standing by a loved one resonated at this time, and the song became quite popular, reaching a chart peak of #3 November 17.
