Kevin Parker's parents separated and divorced when the Tame Impala frontman was four. Growing up in a broken household may have made him cautious about committing fully to a love interest out of fear for the future. This song finds Parker expressing his concerns that his feelings for his girl won't last forever. We started talkin' 'bout devotion The kind that goes on eternally And I tell her I'm in love with her But how can I know that I'll always be? Parker told Apple Music "Is It True" is about the uncertainties of young love: "Let's not talk about the future. We don't know what it holds. I hope it's forever but how do I know? When all is said and done, all you can say is 'we'll see.'"
The song is a sort of prequel to The Slow Rush track "Instant Destiny." That tune finds Parker casting aside his fears about commitment and proposing to his now-wife, Sophie Lawrence.
Kevin Parker is a notoriously slow worker and this was the only song on The Slow Rush that he spent a short time working on. He explained to Esquire that "Is It True" was originally a one-minute demo he'd recorded in about six hours in late 2018. Parker completed writing, recording and mixing the song between midnight to eight am on November 21, 2019, before finishing the album the next morning.
