This R&B-leaning song is a throwback to the vinyl era, complete with the sound of a needle popping at the beginning of the track. Aldean grew up listening to the vinyl LPs his father had, and he wanted to bring in some of those retro influences onto this song. He told The Boot: "I love the fact that everything's coming out on vinyl now. CDs and streaming and all that sounds really clean, but I still like that little dirtiness of the old vinyl."
Aldean told Apple Music the song's retro R&B sound makes him feel "like I'm in an eighth-grade dance, listening to Boyz II Men."
The song contains Jason Aldean's favorite lyric on 9. When I got what I got, I don't miss what I had The old me before you belongs to the past Aldean explained to Radio.com he is saying, "Do you ever wish you had anything else, relationship wise, do you ever wish you had this versus that, and you're basically just saying when I got what I got - no, I don't want anything else."
