The song is about Lavigne's grandfather who passed away while she was on her "Try To Shut Me Up" tour. She dedicates the song to him in the liner notes.
Lavigne's 2002 debut album Let Go was mostly American made, but she got help from fellow Canadians on her second album, Under My Skin. "Slipped Away" she wrote with Chantal Kreviazuk; it was produced by Raine Maida of Our Lady Peace.
