This song is about Eleanor Friedberger, the vocalist of the indie rock duo The Fiery Furnaces, whom Spoon frontman Britt Daniel once dated. He explained to Pitchfork: "It was a song about Eleanor. It was a big-picture song, and at the end it zooms way into this specific moment. I could definitely see her standing on that corner."
Eleanor Friedberger later had a relationship with the lead singer of Franz Ferdinand Alex Kapranos and he penned the song "Eleanor Put Your Boots On" about her.
