A "Magical Mystery Tour" was a bus trip to an unknown destination. They were popular in England at the time and inspired the song.
Five months after recording "Magical Mystery Tour," The Beatles started making a TV special with the song as the title track. The special aired in the UK in 1967, but didn't appear in the US until 1976 when it was released in theaters, becoming the fourth Beatles movie. The film, which was an early precursor of today's reality TV shows, didn't go over well with critics or fans.
When The Beatles started recording this, they only had the title, a little bit of music, and the first line. Paul McCartney wrote the verses, John Lennon the refrain.
