This melancholy tale finds Shawn Mendes waking up to a half-empty bed after a one-night stand. Where were you in the morning, baby? You didn't leave your number for me Left me without a warning, baby Where were you in the morning, baby? The girl left in the morning without so much as a good-bye leaving Shawn lamenting his misjudgment of what he thought was a true connection.
Like many of the songs on the album, "Where Were You in the Morning?" is a collaboration with Teddy Geiger, Geoff Warbuton and Scott Harris. It was during the penning of the soulful tune in 2017 that Shawn discovered how to hit the high notes that he uses during the record. "Technically... last year, I couldn't sing falsetto," he told Entertainment Weekly: "I figured out how to the day I wrote Where Were You In the Morning. You never discover you sing falsetto again; you just do, once. You never discover you can say a certain thing again; you just do."
