Did You Know?

Interesting facts and trivia about Untitled (How Could This Happen to Me?). By Songfacts®.

The Simple Plan songwriting team of lead singer Pierre Bouvier and drummer Chuck Comeau wrote this song about the consequences of drunk driving. It's written from the perspective of someone who caused an accident; the pain won't go away and he keeps asking, "how can this happen to me?" Bouvier explained what inspired the song: "These two friends of ours in high school went out drinking and driving and had an accident. The driver killed his best friend, who was in the passenger seat. Stuff like that makes you realize you have to be careful and realize you're not invincible."

This is an uncharacteristic ballad by Simple Plan that appears as the last track on their second album, Still Not Getting Any. The band didn't play any instruments on the track; Bill Sample played the piano and Bob Buckley arranged the string section. It was released as the album's third single.

The video for this song, which supports Mothers Against Drunk Driving, was directed by Marc Klasfeld, whose credits include Katy Perry's "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" and Red Hot Chili Peppers' "The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie." It's very intense, portraying an accident scene where workers try to save a girl who was driving a car hit by a drunk driver. We then go back in time to see the crash; on impact her family is violently torn asunder, symbolic of their devastating loss. The video was nominated for Best Editing and Best Cinematography at the MTV Video Music Awards and for Best Video at Canada's MuchMusic Video Awards.
