This dramatic duet between Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper was recorded for the 2018 remake of the classic movie A Star is Born. Gaga plays the rising star Ally, and Cooper the established musician Jackson Maine, who becomes her mentor and lover. Gaga explained that the song serves a crucial moment in the film. She told Zane Lowe on his Beats 1 Radio show: "It's two people talking to each other about the need and the drive to dive into the deep end and stay away from the shallow area."
Lady Gaga wrote the song in four hours with British-American producer Mark Ronson, former Dirty Pretty Things guitarist Anthony Rossomando, and songwriter Andrew Wyatt (Bruno Mars' "When I Was Your Man"). Rossomando, Andrew Wyatt and Ronson had previously co-written "Somebody to Love Me" for the latter's 2010 album Record Collection.
Though best known for upbeat pop hits, Gaga is no stranger to ballads, having recorded such love songs as "Speechless," "You and I" and "Million Reasons."
