Did You Know?

Interesting facts and trivia about Love Will Lead You Back. By Songfacts®.

This song evokes the emotions you would feel after being separated or divorced when all the love you had for that person remains in your heart. Through all the pain and suffering, you fell that love will lead you back again.

Written by Diane Warren, it was the fifth #1 hit she wrote, and one of her favorite titles. Said Warren: "I like the idea of someone being strong enough to let somebody go, knowing in their heart they're going to come back. It takes a lot of strength, and I'm always attracted to songs with strong characters."

"Tell It To My Heart" was when Leslie Wunderman became Taylor Dayne, getting a deal with Arista Records just for the single. When the song became a global hit, Clive Davis and Arista put their promotional power behind her, and she delivered 3 more hits from her first album. For her second album Can't Fight Fate, Arista continued using outside songwriters, even though Dayne was anxious to be part of the process. In our 2010 interview, Taylor told us: "This was my sophomore record. That was 1989, so at that point you're talking 3 years of really understanding, seeing more publicly what really moves people. You're part of the machine, and the machine's moving with or without you, because I was in that pop world. But I also understood that a great ballad, a great song like that can touch millions of people in such a way that you'll never understand, you can't comprehend. Yet you can look at your own history, like myself personally, and think of the songs that have moved me. 'Love Will Lead You Back' was instant for me. I remember sitting there with Clive and he played me 'Love Will Lead You Back' and that's one of Diane's biggest gems. Just one of those incredible, incredible songs."
Regarding Diane Warren, Dayne added: "Diane is probably one of the most passionate, involved songwriters I've ever met in my entire life. She was calling the studio on that first record. We had no idea who she was, we just knew that this girl was Tenacious D. That's what we call her. She is Tenacious D right there." (Check out our interview with Taylor Dayne.)

This clocks in at 4 minutes and 39 seconds. However, most radio stations resort to playing the single version, which clocks in at 4 minutes and 24 seconds. Six years later in 1995, the 4 minute and 24 second "Single Version" of the song was released again on Taylor Dayne's Greatest Hits. Then, to Taylor's surprise, five years later in 2000, R&B Soul diva Patti LaBelle released a cover version of this song as part of her album When A Woman Loves, an album of ballads and melodies composed by Diane Warren.
