Fireworks

Like most of the other tracks on Ruins, this was inspired by the breakdown of a relationship. First Aid Kit explained the song's meaning during a Consequence of Sound track-by track interview: "'Fireworks' is about hopes, dreams and expectations. How they sometimes can get in the way of your day to day. Sometimes we set ourselves up by having too high or too specific expectations on ourselves and of other people."

The sisters sing on the bridge. Stood out on that beach in Chicago Woke up next to you on Silver Lake Avenue Wherever I went I always knew, always knew 'Til I didn't know They explained in a Genius attribution: "This is a recollection of memories, of times in the past where the path ahead seemed so clear. And then how your heart is broken, when it doesn't work out."

Musically, this has a classic, vintage sound. First Aid Kit explained: "The arrangement was inspired by 50s ballads, by The Everly Brothers and the Skeeter Davis song 'The End of the World.' In the studio we played around with the old timey feel of the song, but also added these 80s juno keyboards and Twin Peaks style guitars to mix it up. It actually was almost effortless, we knew what we wanted the arrangement to be like instantly. We really felt like we've created an interesting sonic world for the song. It's a little bit of a new sound for us, though not in a forced way. Safe to say, we're very proud of this one."
