Did You Know?

Interesting facts and trivia about Flavor Of The Weak. By Songfacts®.

American Hi-Fi's first single, this song is about a girl whose boyfriend doesn't treat her right, and it's driving the singer crazy because he knows he can do better. Note that the title is "flavor of the weak," indicating that her oblivious stoner boyfriend is especially lame.

The video, directed by Chris Applebaum, is patterned after the documentary Heavy Metal Parking Lot. Made in 1986, Parking Lot is a 16-minute video made outside of a Judas Priest concert.

A female friend of singer Stacy Jones served as the song's inspiration. Jones explained to Billboard he originally put himself in her shoes with the perspective that her boyfriend is an idiot. Jones never thought of it as a song for American Hi-Fi, thinking it was too goofy, but when he played the chorus to Bob Rock, the producer told him it was a hit. Rock suggested Jones sing it from his perspective rather than the girl's and they recorded it the same night. "It came together really quickly," he said.
