The song title is a play on words regarding the phrase "paint the town red," meaning to party or celebrate in a rowdy, wild manner. (Green is Ireland's national color). The incident that sparked it off the phrase was when Henry Beresford, 3rd Marquess of Waterford and his fox-hunting friends went on a drunken spree with pots of red paint In the early hours of April 6, 1837. The location of the event has been located in both the Irish town of Waterford and the English town of Melton Mowbray.
