Written by lead singer Rivers Cuomo, this song describes a classic love/hate relationship. Fueled by passion, the couple are crazy about each other but at the same time can't stand each other. They're frustrated because they know they should just love one another, but can't find a way to make it happen.
Sometimes the perfect keyboard sound comes from a very inexpensive device, as Steely Dan proved on "Do It Again." For "This Is Such A Pity," Weezer used a cheap Casio keyboard to get the desired sound.
Bassist Scott Shriner: "That song was tough, and it was the first song we tried to track at Grandmaster [Recorders], I think. It was like the first night, and we probably re-tracked the basic drums for that, like four or five different times, and it was almost going to get thrown out. But somehow, at the last minute, it came together, and it sounds absolutely magical to me. And that's one of my favorite songs on the album."
