Rebbeca Marie Gomez is a singer-rapper of Mexican descent from Inglewood, California, who records under the name of Becky G. She began to gain recognition in 2011 at the age of 14 after she posted several videos of herself performing remixes of popular songs on YouTube. Her cover of Kanye West and Jay-Z's song "Otis," caught the attention of hitmaker Dr. Luke, who signed Becky to his Kemosabe Records imprint.
After co-writing and featuring on singles by Cody Simpson ("Wish U Were Here") and Cher Lloyd ("Oath"), Becky G released this as her own debut single on April 23, 2014. Dr. Luke produced the track for his protégé.
Becky G told the story of the song to Rolling Stone. "It didn't come to me when I was singing in the shower," she said, "but I am a shower singer and someone was making me feel some type of way about it."
