"Black Lungs" finds Architects calling on humanity to examine the role we are playing in the destruction of our planet and fellow creatures. The title is a term associated with lung disease caused by the inhalation of metallic or mineral particles. Jen Hardwick directed the post-apocalyptic video, which shows falling ash and embers surrounding the band members, highlighting the song's message.

Lead guitarist Josh Middleton came up with the riff while rehearsing for a Brighton warm-up gig in late 2018. He recalled to Kerrang: "I remember messing around while rehearsing for the Brighton show, putting an effect on my amp and writing that riff straight away. I still have the video of me doing it on my phone."
