Did You Know?

Interesting facts and trivia about Drive. By Songfacts®.

Incubus lead singer Brandon Boyd explained: "The lyric is basically about fear, about being driven all your life by it and making decisions from fear. It's about imagining what life would be like if you didn't live it that way."

The title doesn't show up in the chorus, which goes: Whatever tomorrow brings, I'll be there With open arms and open eyes Metaphorical driving is the theme of the song though, showing up in the lines: But lately, I'm beginning to find that I Should be the one behind the wheel And Would you choose water over wine Hold the wheel and drive? "Drive" can mean taking control, but also an urge or initiative.

Incubus emerged in the early '90s with a sound that mixed nu-metal with melodic pop. "Drive" is far more to the side of melodic pop, and it gave them their first big hit. The band name, though, is very metal: An incubus is a mythological spirit that has sex with women in their sleep. The female counterpart is a succubus.
