This song deals with the Armenian genocide, which took place from 1915-1918 in the Ottoman Empire, where an estimated 1.5 million Armenians were killed while much of the world was engaged in World War I. All four members of System Of A Down are of Armenian descent; "Holy Mountains" was written by lead singer Serj Tankian and guitarist Daron Malakian.
The "holy mountains" refer to the Armenian Highlands, which border Armenia and Turkey. Mount Ararat, on the Turkish side, is considered the "holy mountain," and a reminder of the genocide for many Armenians.
This is the second System Of A Down song about the Armenian genocide, following "P.L.U.C.K." from their first album.
