This is the first single from art punkster Amanda Palmer's first collaboration with her new band, The Grand Theft Orchestra. Theatre Is Evil was recorded in Melbourne with John Congleton producing. Palmer set up a Kickstarter appeal to raise funds for the record and 24,883 backers ultimately supported the project donating a grand total of $1,192,793.
The song finds Palmer rocking out. She told Spinner: "This was one of those songs that spilled into my head quickly, sounding like something stolen. I had to really search the depths of my music memory library to make sure it wasn't a subconscious cover... and I'm still not convinced. I think it's possibly the closest to pure rock 'n' roll I've ever gotten: It's like a mash-up of Jerry Lee Lewis and Jane's Addiction."
