Did You Know?

Interesting facts and trivia about Sweet Misery. By Songfacts®.

One of the first songs Michelle Branch wrote, this song is about a guy who causes her "sweet misery," making her heart go aflutter but leaving her head skeptical. The lyric isn't fleshed out very far, but Branch had yet to be in love or even have a boyfriend. She did have a lot of songwriting acumen though, and knew that conflicted love was something most people could relate to.

Branch started writing this song while sitting in her Algebra class when she was about 15 - she later became home schooled so she could focus on music. Another song that originated in math class is "Kryptonite" by 3 Doors Down.

The song first appeared on Branch's 2000 independent album Broken Bracelet, which she sold at shows and through her website. On Broken Bracelet, there are two versions of this song: one with full instrumentation and another acoustic. Along with "Goodbye To You," and "I'd Rather Be in Love," it's one of three Broken Bracelet tracks that made it to her major-label debut album, The Spirit Room.
