Love Yourself: Tear is a concept album exploring themes relating to the pains and sorrows of separation. "We're trying to say that if you, in love, when you're not true to yourself, the love won't last," BTS' leader RM (Kim Namjoon) told Billboard's Chelsea Briggs about the album title. "Because love is complex and we always have the dark sides and the sad sides." According to the press release the lyrics of this song "clearly represent the theme of the album by realizing that a love that was thought to be fated was actually a lie." The chorus lyrics translate into English as: Love you so bad, love you so bad Mold a pretty lie for you Love it's so mad, love it's so mad Try to erase myself and make me your doll
"Fake Love" made its worldwide television debut when BTS performed the song live at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards on May 20, 2018.
RM wrote the song with Love Yourself: Tear producer Pdogg and Hitman Bang, who is the founder and CEO of BTS' management company Big Hit Entertainment.
