It is characterized by its heavy use of melodic guitar riffs, often in the form of harmonized dual-guitar harmonies, as well as its frequent use of growled vocals. It is also known for its use of keyboards and synthesizers to create a more atmospheric sound. The genre is heavily influenced by death metal, but with a more melodic approach. Commonly cited bands in the genre include At the Gates, In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, and Children of Bodom.
