Carnatic vocal music is a form of South Indian classical music that originated in the southern part of India. It is based on a system of ragas (melodic scales) and talas (rhythmic cycles). Carnatic vocal music is usually performed by a solo vocalist accompanied by a group of musicians playing instruments such as the mridangam (a two-headed drum), the ghatam (a clay pot), the veena (a plucked string instrument), and the violin. The vocalist sings in a variety of languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Sanskrit. The music is characterized by its intricate melodic patterns, complex rhythms, and improvisation.
