Dhrupad is a form of Hindustani classical music that originated in the Indian subcontinent. It is one of the oldest forms of North Indian classical music and is considered to be the foundation of Hindustani classical music. Dhrupad is characterized by its slow tempo, deep and meditative mood, and its use of long, sustained notes. It is traditionally performed by a vocalist accompanied by two percussionists playing the pakhawaj and the tabla. The lyrics of Dhrupad are typically in Sanskrit and are based on ancient Hindu texts. Dhrupad is often performed in a call-and-response format, with the vocalist singing a line and the percussionists responding with a rhythmic pattern.
