It is characterized by its minimalistic, repetitive and percussive sound, often featuring a heavy bassline and a syncopated rhythm. Gqom is heavily influenced by traditional South African music such as maskandi and isalakutshelwa, as well as by kwaito and house music. It is typically produced with a laptop and a digital audio workstation.
