Ars Subtilior

Ars Subtilior (“more subtle art”) is a style of music that flourished in the late 14th and early 15th centuries in France and Italy. It is characterized by complex rhythms, intricate melodic lines, and a wide range of textures. The music often features multiple voices, with each voice having its own independent melodic line. The music is often highly ornamented and often includes improvisation. It is often considered to be the first truly polyphonic music.
