The name 'N Sync comes from the last letter each member's first name. The second N comes from Lance Bass' nickname, Lansten. It was Timberlake's mother, Janet, who came up with the name. "The first time we sang together, she goes, 'Man, you guys sound really in sync,'" Timberlake said in an interview with CNN. "And we were like ding, ding, ding."

In 1999, they helped organize the first of their annual celebrity basketball games for the group's Challenge For Children charity. Usher often participates along with various NBA stars. Queen Latifah, Ne-Yo and Ludacris are some of the many big names in music who have participated.
