During SXSW in March 2013, the actor and rapper Childish Gambino (Donald Glover) reached out and asked Lion Babe to open for him. The duo got a record deal with Interscope a few months later, and kept in touch with Glover who guests on this bouncy cut.
The song features Jillian Hervey's voice bounding around a snippet of a vinyl recording of Nina Simone's "Mr. Bojangles." Lion Babe producer Lucas Goodman came across the soul-jazz singer's interpretation of the Jerry Jeff walker penned song whilst interning at retro-minded Truth & Soul Records. "That's a rare record," he told Billboard magazine. "That song was never digitally reissued so the only way you were going to get it was if you bought the 45."
The song was originally released as a single from Lion Babe's 2013 eponymous EP.
