This song was written to reassure that everything will be all right with life. Lead singer Isaac Brock had lost two close friends in life and felt he needed to be reassured with the good things in life. "I was just kind of fed up with how bad s--t had been going, and how dark everything was, with bad news coming from everywhere," he told the A.V.Club in 2004. "I just want to feel good for a day."
Modest Mouse has written about many depressing themes, and they wanted to write a happier album. Float On is just a song about how bad things will always get better eventually.
A group called The Floaters recorded a song with the same title in 1977, but they are completely different songs.
