"Green Eyes" is a love song written by lead singer Chris Martin about how his life has been so much better ever since he met her and that he could never go on without her. Martin wrote it for another girl before he met Gwyneth Paltrow. In an interview with Billboard Magazine, Martin elaborated: "It's about an American friend of mine who looked after me when I was being a bit of an idiot. I met this friend in New Mexico; I was out there to see a Dave Matthews concert and I'm glad I went to that concert and I'm glad I met her."
When Martin started dating Paltrow, he decided against performing this song to avoid upsetting her. At a concert in Australia in 2003, Martin reportedly told the audience: "It's not about the right person. It's like an old pair of trousers. It doesn't fit."
Coldplay guitarist Jonny Buckland cited this as one of his favorite songs on A Rush of Blood to the Head as it was so easy to record. He revealed to the band's e-zine: "That was a first take thing, so it's got a special place in my heart for that!"
